With a boost in international tourism and cross-country migration, it is increasingly common for people to go to live in a foreign country, sometimes for an extended period of time. This can be a frustrating experience, however, as each country has its own cultural traditions which can be difficult for the newcomers to understand and to adopt.
There are certain rules and customs that newcomers to a foreign country should strictly follow. Otherwise, they will incur unnecessary troubles and even punishment. In some Muslim countries, for example, there are religious taboos against drinking alcohol, and women in public have to cover their faces with a vail. If you break these rules, you are not only showing disrespect to the Muslim culture but also risking being penalized or imprisoned.
However, nowadays most countries welcome cultural diversity and show understanding and forgiveness to foreigners. In these more tolerant environments, immigrants live peacefully with the local people without changing their way of life or thinking. In the United States, for example, there are a variety of racial and ethnic groups, each with their unique cultural traditions. They may be dressed in strange clothing, eat exotic food or believe in a different God, but they are accepted and respected as a valuable supplement to the standard American culture.
In conclusion, visitors or immigrants to a foreign country should follow the customs of the country if they show respect to the local people or if they are required by law. But on the other hand, these newcomers should preserve their own cultural beliefs and customs because most foreign countries welcome cultural difference and value cultural diversity.
