A recent survey conducted by Sydney University showed that there was an obvious trend that the employees turnover in companies had been increasing dramatically in the last ten years, with new graduated students accounting for more than ninety percent of the turnover rate.
This phenomena has been one of the hottest topics in social media and even governments study agenda.
From my perspective, there are three major reasons contributing to this trend. First of all, with the current education system emphasizing on individual development, young people tend to put their career development as priority while working, which causes job-changing being seen more often than before. Young people often see their company as a platform which they can gain working experience and new knowledge now, which may lead them to their next career step. It is likely that they would change jobs, if a better working opportunity turns up providing more space for self-development. While people in the old days with traditional education were taught they should work for the best interest for their company, even to sacrifice personal interest, which led to less job-changing back then. Furthermore, young people armed with easy access to information these days also attribute to the fast employee turnover. With the help of internet, youngsters now can easily update their resumes to employment websites such as Career One and My Future. Job vacancies information can also be obtained much easier than before. In such an open information environment, young people are more confident to climb up the corporate ladders by changing to other jobs. Last but not least, in the harsh global economic environment recently, a large number of young people are made redundant, which forces them to look for other jobs.
Some politicians and experts advocate that, with the current fast job-changing culture, it is detrimental for company or even industry development sometimes. Especially industries require highly skillful workers who need to be trained for a long period before they could work without supervision. Some people even argue the young people today will never expertise in a certain field since they can hardly have enough thorough insights before quitting the jobs. However, I insists the faster job turnover is one of the triggers of innovations and society developments. For instance, a company’s CEO is probably not a good CEO if he or she keeps working in the same company department for all his or her life, as only by equipping broader knowledge can give him or her better capacity to stear a company. The prosperity of companies and industries will push our society moving forward continuously. In a nutshell, it should be accepted and well recognised if young people change jobs with appropriate reasons such as better career development or a strategic move for personal fulfillment.
