Compared to the people four decades ago, nowadays we have much more abundant resources available to better understand what activities affects and influences our health, among which scientist advise and suggestions are given as the reference for identifying good or bad activities for health. However, not surprisingly, the majority of people are often found continue with the unhealthy activities which were identified as bad for health by scientists. This could be explained by several reasons as below.
The basis of examine this phenomenon is to look at the human decision model. Every human activity is based on the decision the brain made, whose goal is to gain satisfaction and pleasure. Most of the time, based on recent studies, the brain structure intends to gain short term satisfaction rather than worrying about the long term risk. This decision mechanism, which could be traced back to our ancestors, whose main goal is to survive and live from the tough environment, still exists in our brain. For instance, the very first reaction when being hungry for most people is to take the food instead of thinking about the calories and fat ratio of the food, let alone the side effects they might do to our body in the long run. Similarly, scientist advice is easily overridden by brain because it thinks there are other urgent demands to be fulfilled with short term urgency, which resulted in the activities bad for health.
Another factor to consider is the human being is a socialized animal which means we intend to imitate and learn from other people’s activity. Our brain generally puts this socialized imitation in its second prioritized position, letting us to think that it’s safe to imitate others. Even though you were told by scientist that Macdonald Big Mac is not good for health in the first place, it could be quite difficult in resisting to go to Macdonald with friends. This imitation is also generally been put a prioritized tag than other informational knowledge such as scientific advice.
Nevertheless, science has always been the key to our health improvement. The solution to promote more good activity execution also relies on science. First of all, more detailed actions could be given by scientists. By doing this the long term benefit could be transformed into the short term daily goal which is easy to carry out and most importantly, easier to be prioritized for brain. Furthermore, scientists could provide more family oriented activity , which could be accepted and prioritized by individual and cross monitored among family members.
